dear diary,

i looked out the window this morning and realized that the grass is green. i don't know when it happened because yesterday the grass everywhere was kind of brown looking. can grass just get green overnight? one of my favorite things about summer is when the fireflies come out. i especially like it when they hit my windshield and leave a weird phosphourescent streak.

the drive-in theatre in the corn field opens in april and i am anxious to go. all of the good things happen in spring. essentially since i've been housed up all winter long and i'm ready to get back out.

kevin called and wanted to know when we're going to go fishing. nathan asked the same thing on friday. if i think about what a creepy hick thing fishing is, it might scare me. but there is something so awesome about being out in the middle of a lake with beer and a ghetto blaster and not a care in the world except nibbles on your line. being on the lake when the sun sets and the mosquitoes come even has its own sentimentality. summer just smells better.

i'm excited for: tank tops, flip-flops, pig-tails, sunscreen that smells like coconuts, bug spray that smells like lemon, bbq's, air conditioning, playing in the hose, sparklers, strawberry pie, fireworks, picking berries, the indian nature creek center's walking trails, the rowboats and paddleboats at palisade's park, the chili cook-off, washing my car, hunting for ginseng and mushrooms, the iowa state fair, the butterfly exhibit in des moines, and all other things generically summery and midwestern and small townish. it's impossible to hate a small town in the summer time.

my favorite part of spring is when the bulbs start sprouting. we never had this in california, not like it is here. you wake up one morning and everything outside is blooming suddenly. i have a rose bush that i planted two years ago and enormous pink and white azaleas - but my favorite thing to watch bloom are the lilac bushes around the perimeter of the house. white, pink, and purple and they smell insanely good and when i open the windows in the house in spring, the whole house smells like one big lilac.

the CR indie film fest is next sat. so i bought my tickets this morning. i think sometime this week i will take myself to go see eternal sunshine. maybe i can talk goose into going if i buy him lunch. i feel antsy sitting at the computer while the sun is shining so brightly now in the afternoon. i think my bicycle needs me.
